“To rebuild a broken vocabulary is to rebuild a world,” wrote the poet Adrienne Rich in 1979. Ready to rebuild? I know… it’s a big ask in mid-summer, when we all just want to chill. Well. We’ve got another week to rest before we get going into the new year, and rebuild, better. Greetings from a hot day on the beach in southern Israel. I’ve got my Lab/Shul beach towel so even when afar I’m with you. And in ten days I’ll head back to NYC – excited for a full and meaningful High Holy Day season with you all – focused on our annual theme – Holy Shift. Why Holy Shift? At times of transitions, big and small, we gather to learn from ancestral wisdom and from each other how to better handle and be helpful with each shift. Please join us in NYC and online for our 2026/5787 High Holy Days season – back in Tribeca and online. We’ll explore the shifts – together. But, technically, the High Holy Days don’t start in September. They begin next Friday – August 14th, the First of Elul. As the new moon will rise into next week’s Shabbat, we will begin the final month of this Jewish year, and also activate WORD WATCH – our 2026 40-day online PREPENT journey, leading into Yom Kippur. This online blog, free for all, is delivered to your inbox through Substack, offering daily reflections, written by me and by the Lab/Shul staff and members of our wider community. Each offering spotlights one word worth weighing, to help us focus on the shifts we want to speak in order to witness, reimagine and rebuild our world.
