Dear Lab/Shul Community,

On Friday, November 21, we gather again – Sabbath Queen returns for 5786!

Once per month, on Friday evenings, we gather – in person and online – to welcome Shabbat: aka “Sabbath Queen”. We’ll kick off our monthly series with a unique blend of live musical liturgy, immersive ritual, happy hour and a delicious community feast in a way that only Lab/Shul can.

With that, I say, Welcome Home.

That’s what it feels like to walk into a Sabbath Queen, like somehow even if you didn’t plan it, you’ve come home. You belong here. How can you tell? Because your presence is the transformation. Because our space changes shape, with you in it. A twinkle in the eye, a shimmer of glitter, here you are in Lab/Shul’s artist-driven sanctuary – creative, relevant, curious, courageous. And we’re here for it.

And we’re here for the new moonlight of Kislev into the winter holidays.

And we’re here for the afterwaves of the NYC Mayoral elections, come what may.

And, as Pamela Ayo Yetunde describes, we’re here because we choose mutuality over brutality.

Around the country and certainly here in NYC, this past election cycle has amplified violent messaging, misinformation, and social commentary that makes election outcomes feel like a personal attack. The extraordinary division, even right here within our own community, has been almost unbearable. We choose to create a space in the “palace in time” that is Shabbat, for our nervous systems to settle. Sabbath Queen is where – together, in community – we can process and regulate our roller coaster of emotions through ancient prayers and the humming and buzzing of open-hearted invitation.

So join Rabbi Amichai, Shira, Ben, and special guest artist, percussionist Shirazette Tinnin for our first Sabbath circle of the season. Come, Be the Sabbath Queen you want to see in the world. Your spirit will thank you.

With great love,
Shira Kline
