Oh Lab/Shul…

My life is a series of Disney movies and playlists dictated by my 5½ year old. As a versatile songwriter and musician, I crave many genres of music – classical, R&B, folk, rock. Thank goodness Lin Manuel-Miranda is not a one-trick pony. After all, we listen to the soundtrack of Encanto endlessly. In this truly magnificent animated film, the Madrigal family serves their village, Encanto, using their magical gifts. At the start of the film, the community functions in a very “top down” manner, with their success resulting solely from the magical gifts of the Madrigals. Ultimately, we learn that the community flourishes and thrives not only from the Madrigal’s “professional magical helpers” but also from the hands of everyone who lives there.

Here in our own “Encanto,” Lab/Shul, we know that our success is not only a result of the work of our own “professional magical helpers” (read: ritual leaders + staff). Rather, it is thanks to the contributions of the hands and hearts of so many Partners and community members who volunteer their time to help make Lab/Shul the artist-driven everybody-friendly community we are.

Lori Roth GaleOne important set of those community hands belongs to Lori Roth Gale, one of the circle holders of our Kaddish Club, which holds space for our community members who are experiencing grief and loss. Lori’s hands – as well as her creative mind and giant heart – will invite in Shabbat this Friday night online at our community-group-led SHABasics, together with other members of the Kaddish Club. We invite the whole Lab/Shul community to join this Friday eve as we bring in Shabbat with this deeply important community group that is there for us whenever we need it. Register here to join us online for SHABasics.

You will hear more about Lori when she is recognized at the Lab/Shul Gala on June 12th, celebrating Lab/Shul’s 10th anniversary. Lori will be recognized as one of the “Milestone Minyan” who have helped shape the very essence of Lab/Shul.
