They are members of The Parents Circle-Families Forum\, an extraordinary joint initiative uniting over 700 bereaved families from Israeli and Palestinian backgrounds who have collectively chosen the path of reconciliation. Moderated by Rabbi Sarah Berman\, Damelin and Jafar will share their stories and discuss why fostering relationship-building and mutual understanding is crucial to achieving lasting peace. \nRegister here >\n—\nRobi Damelin is the Israeli spokesperson of the Parents Circle. Her son\, David\, was killed by a Palestinian sniper in 2002 while guarding a checkpoint during his army reserve service. Robi was named a 2015 Woman of Impact by Women in the World. Robi was selected by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice as one of four Women PeaceMakers. She is the protagonist featured in the documentary\, One Day after Peace. Robi was invited to brief the Security Council at the United Nations in May 2022. \nMohamed Abu Jafar lives in Jenin\, in the West Bank\, Palestine. He has been a member of the Parents Circle since 2016. In 2002\, his 16-year old brother was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers\, injuring 1 others and preventing others from aiding Mohamed’s brother. This tragedy led Mohamed to study nursing. Today he works as a Quality Manager at the Palestinian Ministry of Health. He has taken part in the Parents Circle’s Young Ambassadors for Peace Program\, and is a facilitator and manager for the organization’s Youth Summer Camp.

DESCRIPTION:Death Over Dinner: Jewish Edition\nMonday\, February 12th\n6:30 – 8:30pm\nBrooklyn\nThroughout the past several years\, grief and loss have been an inextricable part of our collective lives. Death Over Dinner: Jewish Edition is an invitation to address the basic human fact that we are all\, at some point\, going to die\, and to do it over the table\, a place where we can break bread and create connections. \nThis event will include an opportunity to discuss essential questions\, and consider how to live well in the face of mortality. Over a delicious dinner (because we should also enjoy!)\, we will have an exploration of accessible Jewish texts to prompt questions and discussions about quality of life\, decision making\, and communicating wishes with loved ones. \nWe will be led by Rabbi Melanie Levav\, from our partner Shomer Collective\, and Naomi Less of Lab/Shul. They believe that talking about death not only better prepares us to approach life’s most challenging moments\, but also helps us articulate and affirm who we are and what we ultimately care about. But what if we could experience songs that embrace matriarchy and the Feminine Divine as the unquestioned core of our foundational narratives? How would it sound\, and what kind of impact would it have? \nCelebrate the opening of Central Synagogue’s new exhibition Toratah: The Artistry of Transformation\, with a concert marking the album release of Zimratah: Songs of Toratah – a collection of songs that celebrate the language of Toratah\, a revolutionary rewrite of the Hebrew Bible. In the exhibition and concert\, Toratah reverses the genders of all its characters\, placing women at the center of our sacred texts and opens up possibilities for gender diversity. \nThis concert features acclaimed and stylistically diverse international singer-songwriters who composed singable melodies from verses of Toratah. Through their words and music\, they contribute to the creation of a new cultural language. DESCRIPTION:Performance of PHARAOH\nfollowed by Q + A with creator Rabbi Misha Shulman and Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie\nSunday\, March 17th\n3pm\nTheater for the New City\nThe piece\, which tells the biblical Exodus story from the perspective of the king of Egypt\, is a work for two artists: Shulman\, dressed in black\, gives voice to all the characters\, while Kalamandalam John\, founder and Director of Kalatharangini Kathakali School in South India\, performs the play in movement theater using vibrant traditional Indian dance drama and elaborate makeup. Everything is in English. Michael Posnick directs. \nThe production was inspired in 2008 when Shulman was in the village of Muzhikulam\, Kerala to watch a fifteen-day play called the Asokavanikangam\, or the Asoka Tree Garden\, performed in the Kudiyatam\, Sanskrit theater tradition. This Indian classic\, taken from the Ramayana\, the holy Hindu book\, tells of how The arch-villain Ravana kidnaps the goddess Sita\, taking her to his island of Lanka\, and trying repeatedly to convince her to succumb to him. Shulman describes the experience as “riveting\,” “the slowest thing you’ve ever witnessed\,” and “the best thing I had seen in my life.” Longing to make a parallel play of his own\, Shulman imagined a staging of the Exodus story in which Jews could watch a play about the inner life of Pharaoh\, their greatest enemy\, modeled on Ravana and reimagined with Indian influences. \nThe piece ultimately evolved into a two-man production: a dialogue between a Pharaoh character performed in physical theater by Kalamandalam John\, founder and Director of Kalatharangini Kathakali School in South India\, and Misha Shulman\, clad in black\, voicing all the characters of the story including Pharaoh\, Moses (stuttering)\, Pharaoh’s son\, wife and father; an Egyptian priest and Death. They are accompanied musically by Galen Passen on Sitar and Tripp Dudley on drums. Kalamandalam John performs with the elaborate costume\, colorful makeup\, intricate gestures and expressive facial movements of Kathakali. \nThe piece was initially envisioned to be performed by Shulman as a solo show\, influenced by the spirit and style of Kudiyatam. It was workshopped in Toronto\, where Shulman was playwright in residence of Crow’s Theater. Later he had a staged reading at the 14th Street Y\, where he was a LABA fellow.
