DESCRIPTION:Breaking the Silence Before and After October 7th\nWednesday\, January 24\n12 PM ET\nOnline\nMembers of the New Israel Fund’s long time grantee and partner Breaking the Silence will be speaking to a North American audience for the first time since October 7th. \nCome hear from three Breaking the Silence members about their experiences in Gaza in the past\, as reservists now\, and about how these IDF veterans- turned- anti-occupation- activists are meeting this impossible moment. \nRegister here >\nBenzion (Benzi) Sanders grew up in the Orthodox community on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. After graduating from a leading Modern Orthodox high school in New York he went to Israel and studied for three years in yeshivot in Beit Shemesh and Maale Adumim. In 2011 he took on Israeli citizenship and was drafted into the IDF where he served in the Sayeret Nahal special forces unit between the years 2012-2015. After a lengthy training\, Benzi spent most of his service stationed in different parts of the West Bank and was also deployed to the northern Gaza Strip during the 2014 war. Following his service\, he studied Philosophy and Middle Eastern Studies at Bar Ilan University and was an active member of the Meretz party. \nNadav Weiman was born and raised in Tel Aviv. During his army service\, he served in a sniper’s team in the special forces of the Nahal brigade\, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He studied Democratic Education at Seminar Hakibbutzim College in Tel Aviv. He worked as a high school history and literature teacher and was the legal guardian and counselor for a home for underprivileged teens in Tel Aviv. Nadav first joined Breaking the Silence as a Testifier-Activist in 2012 and later served as the coordinator of the Testifier-Activist program. In 2016 Nadav became Breaking the Silence’s Director of Education and from 2018 to 2020 he served as the organization’s Advocacy Director. Currently Nadav serves as one of the organization’s Educational Training Officer. \nLuiz Aberbuj was born in Porto Alegre\, Brazil and grew up in the local Jewish community. A graduate of Habonim Dror youth movement. Graduated from a “Training Year for Instructors and Leadership Abroad/ Machon Le’Madrichim”\, a program in which he also worked as an instructor. Immigrated to Israel in 2014\, then enlisted in the Nachshon Regiment\, Kfir Brigade\, served between 2014 and 2016\, spending most of the service in the West Bank\, Gaza and Lebanon Borders. He is currently studying Political Science at Bar Ilan University\, and also worked as an educational coordinator for Israel/South America gap year programs. Nowadays he works as Breaking the Silence’s Jewish Diaspora Educational Coordinator. \nAbout Breaking the Silence: Breaking the Silence takes testimonies from Israeli veterans who fought in the West Bank and Gaza\, shedding light on the ugliness of war and occupation. They have taken it upon themselves to expose the public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories. Their work aims to bring an end to the occupation.

January (Tevet – Shevat\, 5784) on the Jewish calendar\, brings the anticipation of seeds dormant underground about to break through to the surface – Tu Bshvat (Jan 24-25\, 2024). Perhaps so too are the seeds of our own healing. \nLab/Shul’s ReCollect/Yizkor is a seasonal gathering to remember our loved ones\, share stories\, lift memory\, and say Kaddish\, the ancient memorial prayer\, together. Throughout the year\, ReCollect meets near or on the times of memory (Yizkor) on the Jewish calendar (Yom Kippur\, Sukkot\, Passover and Shavuot). \nOur Winter 2024 session of ReCollect will be uniquely meaningful as we continue to grapple with the devastation and loss in Israel\, Palestine\, Gaza and beyond. They are members of The Parents Circle-Families Forum\, an extraordinary joint initiative uniting over 700 bereaved families from Israeli and Palestinian backgrounds who have collectively chosen the path of reconciliation. Moderated by Rabbi Sarah Berman\, Damelin and Jafar will share their stories and discuss why fostering relationship-building and mutual understanding is crucial to achieving lasting peace. \nRegister here >\n—\nRobi Damelin is the Israeli spokesperson of the Parents Circle. Her son\, David\, was killed by a Palestinian sniper in 2002 while guarding a checkpoint during his army reserve service. Robi was named a 2015 Woman of Impact by Women in the World. Robi was selected by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice as one of four Women PeaceMakers. She is the protagonist featured in the documentary\, One Day after Peace. Robi was invited to brief the Security Council at the United Nations in May 2022. \nMohamed Abu Jafar lives in Jenin\, in the West Bank\, Palestine. He has been a member of the Parents Circle since 2016. In 2002\, his 16-year old brother was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers\, injuring 1 others and preventing others from aiding Mohamed’s brother. This tragedy led Mohamed to study nursing. Today he works as a Quality Manager at the Palestinian Ministry of Health. He has taken part in the Parents Circle’s Young Ambassadors for Peace Program\, and is a facilitator and manager for the organization’s Youth Summer Camp.

DESCRIPTION:Songs of Toratah: Album Release Concert\nThursday\, February 29\n7:00–8:30 pm ET\nNYC\nThe Torah has traditionally centered on men\, and music inspired by the Bible has often followed suit. But what if we could experience songs that embrace matriarchy and the Feminine Divine as the unquestioned core of our foundational narratives? How would it sound\, and what kind of impact would it have? \nCelebrate the opening of Central Synagogue’s new exhibition Toratah: The Artistry of Transformation\, with a concert marking the album release of Zimratah: Songs of Toratah – a collection of songs that celebrate the language of Toratah\, a revolutionary rewrite of the Hebrew Bible. In the exhibition and concert\, Toratah reverses the genders of all its characters\, placing women at the center of our sacred texts and opens up possibilities for gender diversity. \nThis concert features acclaimed and stylistically diverse international singer-songwriters who composed singable melodies from verses of Toratah. Through their words and music\, they contribute to the creation of a new cultural language. After singing and dancing with us\, partake in a celebratory reception in our exhibition space to experience Toratah: The Artistry of Transformation\, with visual artwork by BeitToratah.org founder Yael Kanarek. \nSongs composed and performed by: Shira Averbuch\, Elana Brody\, Koach Baruch (KB) Frazier\, Au.D\, Yuli Yael Be’eri\, Yosef Goldman\, Naomi Less\, Rabbi Annie Lewis\, Chava Mirel*\, Alicia Jo Rabins\, Miriam Rubin\, Beth Schafer*\, Basya Schechter\, Julie Silver*\, and Kohenet Dr. Harriette E.
