DESCRIPTION:On a day when we lift up what has been broken\, we pause to grieve\, raise up the shards\, and rise from the rubble to the task of repair and renewal.  \nJoin Co-Founders and Spiritual Leaders Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie and Shira Kline with guests including poet Rodger Kamenetz\, Rev. Derrick McQueen\, and Rabbi Mira Rivera for a special SoulSpa Zoom ritual on the Ninth of Av.  Through poetry and prayer\, meditation and conversation\, we’ll create sacred space together for the broken pieces of our personal and public lives.  \nThe Ninth of Av is Judaism’s saddest day\, marked by fasting\, reflecting and lamenting historical destruction and exile\, as well as enduring\, current realities of hatred\, division and discrimination.  \nThe afternoon of the fast is traditionally the time in which the rebirth of hope begins\, as we rise from grief towards growth\, guided by our ancestral prophetic promise.  \nFollowing this event\, Shira and Rabbi Amichai will be joining our partners at TIRDOF for an in-person and online gathering in Central Park\, to Mourn those lost to COVID-19. DESCRIPTION:Lab/Shul is honored to join T’ruah\, JFREJ\, and other partners in faith and justice for a ritual gathering of song\, liturgy\, and community in Central Park’s East Meadow on the evening of the 9th of Av\, August 7th\, so that we may ease our hearts together. \nTwo and a half-years into a global pandemic\, we see a deep need for a moment of communal acknowledgement of the vast loss experienced by our communities and our city. As the Jewish calendar urges us to reflect on historic pain and destruction\, we gather together to name and integrate our sense of loss\, mourning those whose lives have been taken by the pandemic\, and the pain caused by the exposure of the fatal gaps in societal webs of support for the most marginalized.  \nJoin Shira Kline and Rabbi Amichai\, along with leaders\, artists and activist from other communities and organizations\, in person and online\, to mark and end this fast\, together.  \nOn the afternoon of Tisha B’Av\, we seek not only to name and metabolize our collective grief\, but also to move forward– not to return to what has passed\, but to build ahead in mutual support and consolation.

DESCRIPTION:Septemer 9\, 2022 // 6:00 – 7:30 pm ET\nON ZOOM\nA creative hands-on art workshop to explore SHIVITI imagery for this year’s High Holy Days of Awe theme.   \nJoin Associate Clergy Ben Freeman\, the ritual team and Lab/Shul community for a deep dive into the transformative power of collage.   \nBen will share a teaching on the art form of visual meditation called SHIVITI (see more info below!) and then guide us in creating our own.  \nAll you need is what you have!  \nMaterials can include: \n\nScissors (or you can rip by hand)\nTape or glue\nPaper\, cardstock\, or another surface to assemble your collage on\nMagazines\, newspapers\, craft paper\, anything that might provide images\, textures\, and colors to work with and that you feel comfortable cutting up.\nPersonal ephemera like letters\, postcards\, old journals\, photos\, etc. if you feel comfortable cutting those materials up.\nClick here to print a few classic SHIVITI images from around the world to be used for cutting up into your collage\nAn open heart and a playful mind!\n\nWith our new SHIVITI imagery to guide\, we’ll close our time together with the season’s first SHABasics: songs and blessings to lead into Shabbat. \nOur theme this year is SHIVITI\, a Hebrew concept that is simultaneously our oldest contemplative meditation technique\, a visual iconography of the sacred\, and an expression of ‘concrete poetry’–a unique genre in which words meet imagery as a way to inspire our sensory awareness. SHIVITI is an invitation to better balance\, towards us setting intention and paying attention to what matters most. \nLet’s reimagine SHIVITI. We will begin our generative workshop by studying midrashic poems from The Missing Jew and other sources. Then we will practice producing new work from texts provided by Rodger.  (You may also bring your own texts.) The work you produce can take the form of poetry in verse\, prose poetry\, poetic prose\, or non-fiction\, whatever genre you feel most comfortable with.  We will share the results\, laugh a little and learn how to open up to the possibility of renewing sacred texts through soulful imagination. \nRODGER KAMENETZ IS A POET AND NON-FICTION WRITER. HIS SINGULAR INTEREST IS THE IMPORTANCE OF PRIMARY IMAGINATION FOR THE SPIRITUAL LIFE. DESCRIPTION:ReCollect\nA Kaddish Gathering\nAs this high holy day season approaches\, we enter a tender season of consciousness – that time has passed and so\, too\, the time when we were last physically together with lost loved ones. \nReCollect/Yizkor is a seasonal gathering to remember our loved ones\, share stories\, lift memory\, break bread and say Kaddish\, the ancient memorial prayer\, together.  ReCollect meets near the times of memory (Yizkor) on the Jewish calendar (Yom Kippur\, Sukkot\, Passover and Shavuot).  \nWhether experiencing a recent loss\, remembering a loved one who passed away long ago\, or showing up in support of community\, we gather to acknowledge feelings of loss that can be particularly painful as we anticipate an empty chair at our tables.  \nOur next ReCollect/Yizkor will help us to prepare for the Yizkor Ritual at Yom Kippur. It will be held BOTH in person (at 5:45 pm ET) * and online (at 6:00 pm ET) simultaneously. \nREGISTER IN PERSON \nREGISTER ONLINE \n*Please note\, the in person event will take place outdoors on a rooftop in Manhattan. Masks will be required while traveling indoors to the roof. If you are comfortable sitting on the ground\, you’re welcome to bring a blanket\, as we have limited seating.
