SUMMARY:Zen Shabbat 5781
DESCRIPTION:Zen Shabbat \nLab/Shul and the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care invite you to a shared experience of sacred space and time\, harmonizing Jewish and Zen traditions in the celebration of Sabbath spirit. \n6:30pm – Put your kettle on\, grab your favorite mug/tea bowl/vessel\, and get your tea ready ~ we will begin together. As steam rises our minds grow quiet\, senses awaken\, breath releases\, body softens\, heart opens ~ together we remember we are not separate from nature\, we are nature. \n*If you don’t have tea don’t worry\, this ritual is about opening our senses\, slowing down\, and being and can be done with our hands as a vessel and our breath as tea. \n7:00pm – Ritual music\, meditation\, spiritual teaching\, and conversation led by Sensei Koshin Paley Ellison\, Sensei Robert Chodo Campbell\, Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie\, and Lab/Shul’s Ritual Team. \nLab/Shul is thrilled to collaborate with photographer Joan Beard and tea ceremonialist Lauren Stern for Zen Shabbat. \n  \nJoan Beard is a Lab/Shul member\, visual artist and nature lover. Joan grew up in Maine near the ocean where she spent her free time exploring forests and coastlines. She went on to live in NYC where she had the honor of working on a desegregation project in  NYC Public Schools District 1 from 2014-2018.  \nHer work has most recently been exhibited at the Whatcom Museum and the CoCa Gallery. She is currently working on a photography project called witness\, memory about her visual relationship to nature and people; teaching photography; and homeschooling her 11-year-old son. \nYou can learn more and buy her artwork on joanbeard.com and also follow her on Instagram @joanbeardphoto. \n  \n \n\nLauren (אש) Stern (she/her) was born and raised on the Upper West Side and is the founder of KINNABARI Teahouse. You can learn more about her tea ceremonies\, art\, garden\, healing work\, and community offerings at kinnabari.com. Join Lauren from 6:30pm-7pm as we build our Virtual Lab/Shul Teahouse and approach the practice of Tea & Ceremony together.

DESCRIPTION:Glow Up\nA Springtime Meditation Practice Series\nElijah\, an earth-shattering\, fire-blasting\, miracle-making ancestor prophet\, was instructed by an angel to find G!d\, and the answer to his spiritual confusion\, depression and outrage in ‘Kol Dmama Daka’\, often translated as ‘voice of thin silence.’ Another translation is ‘voice of the silent minute.’ What is the connection between silence\, a moment in time\, this breath\, and the Great Infinite Mystery? \nDates & Times\nJoin a six-week series\, every Sunday from 10am-11:00am ET\, for straightforward seated meditation practice and opportunity to share\, explore and study this foundation practice of silent meditation. \nFeb 7th\nFeb 14th\nFeb 21st\nFeb 28th\nMarch 7th\nMarch 14th \nSeries Focus\nWhether you are interested in resilience-building & wellbeing\, stress-reduction\, supporting your activism with groundedness & patience\, learning mindfulness\, addressing a spiritual calling\, exploring interconnectedness or the universal subtle human consciousness\, this series will offer time to sit down\, slow down\, turn inwards\, familiarize with basic meditation techniques and hone your skills and appreciation for them. \nDrawing inspiration from Jewish mystical text\, classic Pali & Zen buddhist teachings and modern mindfulness research\, we will predominantly turn to our own body\, mind\, heart and senses to establish our personal embodied spiritual sovereignty. \nThe practices will all be of no physical impact and strain\, and can be done seated\, standing or laying down. SUMMARY:ReCollect: A Seasonal Kaddish Meal
DESCRIPTION:ReCollect\nA Kaddish Meal Hosted by Lab/Shul’s Kaddish Club\nWe selected this date in part to acknowledge the grief many of us feel around the 1-year anniversary when the Covid 19 lockdown began across the US.   \nWe are rekindling our Kaddish Club meals online\, offering an intimate way to support each other during times of active mourning and for those observing a yartzheitz. \nWhether experiencing a recent loss\, remembering a loved one who passed long ago\, or showing up to support community\, we will gather each season to acknowledge feelings of loss that can be particularly painful as we anticipate an empty chair at the table. We will share memories and poetry\, break bread together\, and recite Kaddish for our loved ones – the ancient memorial prayer. \nThis meal will be held with love by Naomi Less\, Lori Roth Gale\, Sandi DuBowski\, Dina Friedman and other community facilitators. We will  co-create sacred space for each other in both large and small groups to remember our loved ones. \nPlease Note: Unlike the Virtual Mourner’s Kaddish call\, this brunch will be held with video screens on. \n  \nYou can join our weekly Virtual Mourner’s Kaddish Call\, every Thursday at 12:00pm ET.

SUMMARY:From Separation to Reparation 2021
DESCRIPTION:From Separation to Reparation 2021\nA Monthly Conversation Series on Civic and Spiritual Resistance to Racism\n“Anyone who permits another to determine the quality of his inner life gives into the hands of the other the keys to his destiny.”\n– Howard Thurman \nRev. Derrick McQueen and Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie invite you to continue our journey from Separation to Reparation\, committed to sustained solidarity and systemic change. Join us for monthly online sessions (followed by optional peer-to-peer learning)\, held from January to June 2021\, focusing on the legacy of Howard Thurman\, leading theologian and civic rights leader as we deepen our understanding of history and reality\, private response and public responsibility. \nWe hope that the teachings of Thurman\, as well as the voices of many other important inspirations\, will help us delve deeper into the difficult and sensitive topic of racism in American life – leading us towards a more conscious collective response and repair.  \nDates\nThird Thursday of the month January through June\, from 7pm – 8:30pm EST.\nThe first two classes are open to all\, for prospective participants to get a feel for the course. We will be “locking” the course in March as we delve deeper as a community. \nJan 21 –  Welcome\nFeb 18 – Back Against the Wall\nMarch 18 – Fear\nApril 15 – Deception\nMay 20 – Hate\nJune 17 – Love \nCourse Format\nThe course will be divided into three modalities: full group learning\, small groups (4 participants) for personal sharing and reflections\, and optional peer-to-peer (2 participants) continued conversations following each session. \nBy combining these three modalities we hope to enable all of us more time to learn from each other\, share our questions and visions\, as we deepen our understanding of these core issues in our lives. Each week we will send out a short email ahead of the session\, with a reminder of reading suggestions and questions to help us prepare and deepen the learning.  \nReading List\nHoward Thurman’s book\, Jesus and the Disinherited will be our core text for this course. Please secure a copy of this book in whatever format works best for you. Two other suggested/optional books will help us ground Thurman’s theory in more contemporary context and as preparation for further learning and action following this course: \n\nThe Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person By Fredrick Joseph\nFrom Here to Equality Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century  By William A. Darity Jr.\, A. Kirsten Mullen\n\nRates\nThis course is open to Lab/Shul Partners – click here to become a Partner today\, no financial contribution necessary. \nClass is offered on a sliding scale of $8-$36 per class.
