SUMMARY:Civic Circle: Rekindling Our Sacred Civic Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Civic Circle: Rekindling Our Sacred Civic Spirit\nCivic Circle is a civic ritual\, a gathering of friends and strangers in a commonplace to nurture a spirit of shared purpose. \nIn a time of deep anxiety\, disconnectedness\, and political polarization\, people need a place to come together in civic community to reflect on and rededicate ourselves to the values and practices of being a contributing member of civic life in the United States. \nWe will reflect and connect around the values and practices of being an active citizen. We’ll reckon with and reflect on our nation’s creed and current experiences through the lens of a civic study. Most of all\, we’ll build civic fellowship together and see how engaging civically can be joyful and communal. \n  \nclick here to rsvp for civic circle\nWant More?\nCivic Circle and #TogetherTuesdays will join forces for a special ritual on Tuesday\, November 10th. SUMMARY:Queer Liberation March
DESCRIPTION:Queer Liberation March for Black Lives & Against Police Brutality\nJoin us and our siblings at the Reclaim Pride Coalition\, to take to the streets of Manhattan for the second annual Queer Liberation March — the Queer Liberation March for Black Lives and Against Police Brutality. Marchers will gather at 12:45pm at Foley Square on Centre St and step off at 1pm sharp. \nLab/Shul will be gathering at 26 Federal Plaza at 12:30pm. You can find us easily because we’ll be holding up our Queer Saints banners! \nReclaim Pride joins with abolitionists such as Mariambe Kaba and others in several cities in demanding a fifty percent reduction in the NYPD budget with a fifty percent reduction in the police force. Those funds must be dedicated to support and services including housing\, healthcare\, education and reparative and restorative justice for Black communities. New York City must prioritize reparations for those who’ve been oppressed and murdered for hundreds of years. \nWhile all Black people are at constant risk of police brutality and murder\, Reclaim Pride\, as queer and trans activists \, recognizes that Black Trans\, Gender Non-Conforming\, and Non Binary people\, especially Black Trans Women\, are faced with the intersection of vicious state and societal racism\, transphobia\, misogyny\, and classism. This must stop now.\n \nKeep Yourself and Others Safe\nMarchers are asked to wear face masks to protect against COVID-19 and to maintain safe distancing. Reclaim Pride can provide a limited number of masks\, hand sanitizer and water to those who need them. And Reclaim Pride will livestream the March online at @queermarch on FB and Twitter/Periscope and via Youtube live on reclaimpridenyc.org for those who can’t attend in person. This March\, like all current protest Marches\, does not have a City/NYPD permit.

SUMMARY:Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony\nThe 15th annual Joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Ceremony is co-organized by Combatants for Peace and Parents Circle – Families Forum and held on Yom Hazikaron (Israeli Memorial Day). The Ceremony challenges the traditional narrative of victimhood and separation\, and brings people together to declare that\, “War is Not an Act of Fate – but a Human Choice!” \nYom Hazikaron\, Israeli Memorial Day\, is a sacred day in Israel. Nearly every Israeli family has lost someone in the conflict\, and together they come to remember these dear ones. However\, traditionally\, Israelis ignore the grief of Palestinian families. Indeed the official Israeli ceremonies are marked by a narrative of hopelessness\, accepting that “we must live or die by our swords.” This leads to deep pain\, fueling the despair prevalent in both societies today. \nWhen Palestinians and Israelis challenge the status quo and come together to acknowledge each other and remember – together\, we start to build a new reality based on mutual respect\, dignity\, equality\, freedom and peace.  In this way\, we are taking responsibility\, challenging our own sense of victimhood\, and better still\, turning a sense of helplessness into empowerment and hope. \nThe Joint Memorial stands as a unique symbol of humanity and persistence. \nWhat began as a small ceremony of 50 people in 2005\, is now the second largest Memorial Day Event held in Israel\, with 10\,000 people attending the live event in Tel Aviv last year. This year\, we will create our largest Ceremony yet. Due to the worldwide Corona quarantine\, the Ceremony will take place without a physically present audience\, but instead will be broadcast live.  It will include special guest speakers and musical performances by Israeli and Palestinian artists.  At the close of the Ceremony we will post links to bereaved families\, Israelis and Palestinians\, who will open their homes for viewers to visit\, discuss or simply share sentiments.

SUMMARY:Women's March NYC: 2020 March
DESCRIPTION:Women’s March NYC : 2020 March\nLab/Shul acknowledges the nuances between the Women’s March Alliance program at Columbus Circle as well as the NYC Chapter of the Women’s March program at Foley Square. We encourage our community to show up\, and stand up with whichever organization they feel represents their views.\n  \nThree years of marching\, training\, organizing\, and building power – it’s all been leading up to this. In 2020\, we have the chance to strengthen the movement we started three years\, and to unite together in the face of continued attacks on our bodies\, our rights\, our immigrant communities\, and our planet. \nThis year\, we aren’t just marching. We’re putting our bodies on the line hand in hand with other mass movements. \nWith your help\, we can make this the largest day of action the country has ever seen\, and demand that our leaders be held accountable\, protect our planet\, and fight for our rights.

SUMMARY:Rally & Press Conference: Jewish New Yorkers for Bail Reform
DESCRIPTION:Rally  & Press Conference: Jewish New Yorkers for Bail Reform\nWe’re joining Bend the Arc\, Avodah\, Kolot Chayeinu\, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah\, and Jews for Racial and Economic Justice to speak out in support of bail reform. \n  \nWe will also fight to defend these critical changes against fear-mongering by police\, prosecutors and regressive politicians who seek to weaponize antisemitism. We know that money bail and pretrial detention neither combat antisemitism nor keep our communities safe. Pretrial jailing – which can cause people to lose their jobs\, housing and healthcare — destabilizes families and communities\, exacerbating root causes of harm and violence. Pretrial detention also exacerbates mental health crisis\, while doing nothing to support treatment\, accountability\, or transformation. \n  \nThe Torah and the Talmud teach that we must be committed to rooting out injustice in all its forms. True community safety requires affordable housing\, economic and educational opportunities\, access to quality healthcare and mental health services\, not money bail or pretrial jailing. \nAll are welcome. \nLearn more about New York City’s jail crisis and the #FreeNewYork movement.

SUMMARY:New Sanctuary Coalition Accompaniment Training
DESCRIPTION:The New Sanctuary Coalition (NSC) accompaniment program recruits and trains volunteers to accompany people facing deportation to their immigration hearings and ICE check-ins. This provides moral support to the person facing deportation and enables volunteers to hold immigration authorities accountable. \nThe Immigration Accompaniment Program helps support families who are going through the immigration process in 3 ways: \n\nPROVIDES A SUPPORT STRUCTURE to strengthen those caught in immigration proceedings\nKEEPS FAMILY MEMBERS INFORMED at every step of the process as their loved ones move forward\nHOLDS LEGAL OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE for providing accurate information and serving due process\n\nHow does it work? \nTraining consists of grounding the immigration system’s present moment in its historical and political context\, framing our work through NSC’s founding principles\, delving into the specifics of what our accompaniment work accomplishes\, and outlining strategies for allyship in light of current threats to migrant communities. \nOnce you’re trained you become part of the accompaniment program. You’ll learn about upcoming accompaniments and can sign up for time slots and locations that work for you. You’ll also leave with resources\, information and thought partnership for building a stronger network of allies in your community. \nLearn more about accompaniment and The New Sanctuary Coalition.

SUMMARY:#JewsAgainstICE Tisha B'Av Action
DESCRIPTION:#JewsAgainstICE Tisha B’Av Action\nJoin Lab/Shul’s Justice Team us on the ninth day of the month of Av to lift up our voices in prayer and mourning. Because Never Again means never again for anybody. \n25 immigrants have died in ICE custody during the Trump administration. Join us this coming Tisha B’Av\, a day of communal mourning\, to grieve the people tracked and killed by this system and to raise our voices for an end to the inhumane treatment of people seeking freedom. \nCorporations like Amazon and Palantir contract with and profit off of ICE and Trump’s deportation machine. We will not stand by and let these companies make money off of the suffering of migrants and asylum seekers. If Congress won’t rein them in\, the people will. This Tisha B’av\, we will gather to mourn the immigrant lives lost because of Amazon and Palantir’s decision to collude with ICE. \nTisha B’Av\, the ninth day of the month of Av\, is the major day of communal mourning in the Jewish calendar. On Sunday\, August 11 at 2pm\, join Congregation Beit Simchat Torah – CBST\, T’ruah\, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice [JFREJ]\, Romemu\, Lab/Shul\, Flatbush Jewish Center\, SAJ-Judaism that Stands for All\, Fort Tryon Jewish Center\, and Malkhut for a deeply Jewish observance of Tisha B’av – gather\, learn\, pray\, and demonstrate our bold\, spiritual resistance by calling out Amazon’s ties to ICE and the Trump deportation machine. \nThis Tisha B’Av\, we will take our collective mourning to Amazon’s doorstep. We will join our allies at Mijente & Make the Road New York to shut down and #DisarmICE. \nBecause when Jews say never again\, we mean it.
