Holding onto home is about more than geography; it is a commitment to reconciliation\, not only for individuals\, but for the land itself. It is a vision of collective liberation\, where the oppressed are free from domination and the oppressors are freed from the systems that bind them to violence. \nThis year’s ceremony will feature testimonials from those displaced by the Nakba\, artistic performances\, and addresses from visionary thinkers from across Palestine and Israel. Together\, we will witness\, remember\, and call for a future rooted in justice\, equality\, and the right for all people to live in dignity in the place they call home. \nHome is not just a building – it is where memory\, identity\, and hope reside. It is the emotional anchor of our lives\, and without it\, there is no stability\, no safety\, and no future. That is why we come together to remember\, grieve\, and reflect\, but also to insist on hope. \nREGISTER >>

SUMMARY:Israeli-Palestinian Joint Memorial Day Ceremony 2025
DESCRIPTION:Israeli-Palestinian Joint Memorial Day Ceremony\nApril 29\, 2025\n8:30pm Jerusalem / 1:30pm EST\nONLINE\nAbout the Ceremony \nThe Joint Memorial Day Ceremony\, organized by Combatants for Peace and The Parents Circle Families Forum\, is one of the largest Israeli-Palestinian jointly organized peace events in history. The Joint Memorial Ceremony provides a unique opportunity for Israelis and Palestinians to grieve together and stand strong in demanding an end to the occupation and ongoing violence. The ceremony occurs yearly on the eve of Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day). In Israeli mainstream culture\, the ceremonies that are most often held to honor this day serve to reinforce cultural narratives of pain\, victimhood\, and hopelessness. The Joint Memorial transforms this narrative by bringing Palestinians to the Memorial alongside Israelis to mourn side by side and model another way forward. \nOn April 29\, 2025\, we will gather for the Israeli-Palestinian Joint Memorial Day Ceremony\, in a powerful act of defiance against the forces that seek to divide us. Now in its 20th year\, the Joint Memorial is a beacon of hope in the darkness. Through testimonies from bereaved Israeli and Palestinian families\, musical performances\, and messages of peace from human rights leaders\, we will prove that even in the face of unimaginable loss\, we can still choose humanity over hatred and hope over despair. The ceremony will take place at 8:30 pm Jerusalem time / 1:30 pm ET. \nREGISTER >>

SUMMARY:Becoming Israel - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Becoming Israel\nStaged Reading of an Original Play + Talkback with R. Amichai Lau-Lavie & Lab/Shul’s Leaders\n\nSunday\, April 27\, 2025\n6:15 Doors | 6:30-9:30pm ET Program\nNYC*\nJoin us for a staged reading & talkback of highlights from Becoming Israel\, an original play written by Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie\, directed by Annie Levy\, and staged by Storahtelling in 2008 to mark Israel’s 60th year. \nRevised for today’s context\, Becoming Israel serves as a thought-provoking entry point for facilitated discussions on modern-day challenges\, questions and realities of Israel/Palestine and Jewish identity.  \nThis event – led by Rabbi Amichai and Lab/Shul’s leadership – opens the week that holds the complex narratives of Israel’s existence\, with commemoration of losses\, celebration of survival and creation of ceremonies for hope\, healing and peace for all the people who consider the holy land their home.  \nMore on Becoming Israel:\nBecoming Israel intertwines three parallel lives—Leah\, a Biblical wife; Rachel\, a Holocaust survivor; and Jake\, a young American on his first trip to Israel—who discover their shared story and common name: Israel\, “The One Who Struggles with Life.” This powerful narrative examines the intersections of individual identity and collective memory\, offering a closer look at the legacy of Israel and its relevance in our current global reality. Originally created by Rabbi Amichai and Storahtelling artists in 2008\, Becoming Israel was revised in 2025.   \nQuestions? Email sylvie@labshul.org. \n*NYC address provided upon RSVP \n\n*Registration is now closed; Unfortunately\, no walk-ins

SUMMARY:Performance of PHARAOH followed by Q + A with creator Rabbi Misha Shulman and Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie
DESCRIPTION:Performance of PHARAOH\nfollowed by Q + A with creator Rabbi Misha Shulman and Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie\nSunday\, March 17th\n3pm\nTheater for the New City\nThe piece\, which tells the biblical Exodus story from the perspective of the king of Egypt\, is a work for two artists: Shulman\, dressed in black\, gives voice to all the characters\, while Kalamandalam John\, founder and Director of Kalatharangini Kathakali School in South India\, performs the play in movement theater using vibrant traditional Indian dance drama and elaborate makeup. Everything is in English. Michael Posnick directs. \nThe production was inspired in 2008 when Shulman was in the village of Muzhikulam\, Kerala to watch a fifteen-day play called the Asokavanikangam\, or the Asoka Tree Garden\, performed in the Kudiyatam\, Sanskrit theater tradition. This Indian classic\, taken from the Ramayana\, the holy Hindu book\, tells of how The arch-villain Ravana kidnaps the goddess Sita\, taking her to his island of Lanka\, and trying repeatedly to convince her to succumb to him. Shulman describes the experience as “riveting\,” “the slowest thing you’ve ever witnessed\,” and “the best thing I had seen in my life.” Longing to make a parallel play of his own\, Shulman imagined a staging of the Exodus story in which Jews could watch a play about the inner life of Pharaoh\, their greatest enemy\, modeled on Ravana and reimagined with Indian influences. \nThe piece ultimately evolved into a two-man production: a dialogue between a Pharaoh character performed in physical theater by Kalamandalam John\, founder and Director of Kalatharangini Kathakali School in South India\, and Misha Shulman\, clad in black\, voicing all the characters of the story including Pharaoh\, Moses (stuttering)\, Pharaoh’s son\, wife and father; an Egyptian priest and Death. They are accompanied musically by Galen Passen on Sitar and Tripp Dudley on drums. Kalamandalam John performs with the elaborate costume\, colorful makeup\, intricate gestures and expressive facial movements of Kathakali. \nThe piece was initially envisioned to be performed by Shulman as a solo show\, influenced by the spirit and style of Kudiyatam. It was workshopped in Toronto\, where Shulman was playwright in residence of Crow’s Theater. Later he had a staged reading at the 14th Street Y\, where he was a LABA fellow. The project was set to premiere at Theater for the New City in March 2020 but was canceled due to the Covid shutdown. \nAdditional performance dates:\nMarch 15 – 31\, 2024\nThursday\, Friday\, Saturday at 8:00 PM\, Sunday at 3:00 PM\nNo performance Friday\, March 22\nTheater for the New City \nLearn more & buy tickets here >\n
