DESCRIPTION:Breaking the Silence Before and After October 7th\nWednesday\, January 24\n12 PM ET\nOnline\nMembers of the New Israel Fund’s long time grantee and partner Breaking the Silence will be speaking to a North American audience for the first time since October 7th. \nCome hear from three Breaking the Silence members about their experiences in Gaza in the past\, as reservists now\, and about how these IDF veterans- turned- anti-occupation- activists are meeting this impossible moment. \nRegister here >\nBenzion (Benzi) Sanders grew up in the Orthodox community on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. After graduating from a leading Modern Orthodox high school in New York he went to Israel and studied for three years in yeshivot in Beit Shemesh and Maale Adumim. In 2011 he took on Israeli citizenship and was drafted into the IDF where he served in the Sayeret Nahal special forces unit between the years 2012-2015. After a lengthy training\, Benzi spent most of his service stationed in different parts of the West Bank and was also deployed to the northern Gaza Strip during the 2014 war. Following his service\, he studied Philosophy and Middle Eastern Studies at Bar Ilan University and was an active member of the Meretz party. \nNadav Weiman was born and raised in Tel Aviv. During his army service\, he served in a sniper’s team in the special forces of the Nahal brigade\, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He studied Democratic Education at Seminar Hakibbutzim College in Tel Aviv. He worked as a high school history and literature teacher and was the legal guardian and counselor for a home for underprivileged teens in Tel Aviv. Nadav first joined Breaking the Silence as a Testifier-Activist in 2012 and later served as the coordinator of the Testifier-Activist program. In 2016 Nadav became Breaking the Silence’s Director of Education and from 2018 to 2020 he served as the organization’s Advocacy Director. Currently Nadav serves as one of the organization’s Educational Training Officer. \nLuiz Aberbuj was born in Porto Alegre\, Brazil and grew up in the local Jewish community. A graduate of Habonim Dror youth movement. Graduated from a “Training Year for Instructors and Leadership Abroad/ Machon Le’Madrichim”\, a program in which he also worked as an instructor. Immigrated to Israel in 2014\, then enlisted in the Nachshon Regiment\, Kfir Brigade\, served between 2014 and 2016\, spending most of the service in the West Bank\, Gaza and Lebanon Borders. He is currently studying Political Science at Bar Ilan University\, and also worked as an educational coordinator for Israel/South America gap year programs. Nowadays he works as Breaking the Silence’s Jewish Diaspora Educational Coordinator. \nAbout Breaking the Silence: Breaking the Silence takes testimonies from Israeli veterans who fought in the West Bank and Gaza\, shedding light on the ugliness of war and occupation. They have taken it upon themselves to expose the public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories. Their work aims to bring an end to the occupation.

Her son\, David\, was killed by a Palestinian sniper in 2002 while guarding a checkpoint during his army reserve service. Robi was named a 2015 Woman of Impact by Women in the World. Robi was selected by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice as one of four Women PeaceMakers. She is the protagonist featured in the documentary\, One Day after Peace. DESCRIPTION:Performance of PHARAOH\nfollowed by Q + A with creator Rabbi Misha Shulman and Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie\nSunday\, March 17th\n3pm\nTheater for the New City\nThe piece\, which tells the biblical Exodus story from the perspective of the king of Egypt\, is a work for two artists: Shulman\, dressed in black\, gives voice to all the characters\, while Kalamandalam John\, founder and Director of Kalatharangini Kathakali School in South India\, performs the play in movement theater using vibrant traditional Indian dance drama and elaborate makeup. Everything is in English. Michael Posnick directs. \nThe production was inspired in 2008 when Shulman was in the village of Muzhikulam\, Kerala to watch a fifteen-day play called the Asokavanikangam\, or the Asoka Tree Garden\, performed in the Kudiyatam\, Sanskrit theater tradition. This Indian classic\, taken from the Ramayana\, the holy Hindu book\, tells of how The arch-villain Ravana kidnaps the goddess Sita\, taking her to his island of Lanka\, and trying repeatedly to convince her to succumb to him. Shulman describes the experience as “riveting\,” “the slowest thing you’ve ever witnessed\,” and “the best thing I had seen in my life.” Longing to make a parallel play of his own\, Shulman imagined a staging of the Exodus story in which Jews could watch a play about the inner life of Pharaoh\, their greatest enemy\, modeled on Ravana and reimagined with Indian influences. \nThe piece ultimately evolved into a two-man production: a dialogue between a Pharaoh character performed in physical theater by Kalamandalam John\, founder and Director of Kalatharangini Kathakali School in South India\, and Misha Shulman\, clad in black\, voicing all the characters of the story including Pharaoh\, Moses (stuttering)\, Pharaoh’s son\, wife and father; an Egyptian priest and Death. They are accompanied musically by Galen Passen on Sitar and Tripp Dudley on drums. Kalamandalam John performs with the elaborate costume\, colorful makeup\, intricate gestures and expressive facial movements of Kathakali. \nThe piece was initially envisioned to be performed by Shulman as a solo show\, influenced by the spirit and style of Kudiyatam. It was workshopped in Toronto\, where Shulman was playwright in residence of Crow’s Theater. Later he had a staged reading at the 14th Street Y\, where he was a LABA fellow. He got his start organizing Israel’s first trade union of waiters in a chain of coffee shops and went on to found Israel’s first National Waiters Union. Alon-Lee emerged as a prominent leader of Israel’s social protest movement in the summer of 2011\, and subsequently served as a political adviser in the Knesset\, Israel’s parliament.

Their latest project is The Juneteenth Seder Project”. \nJon Adam Ross\, Executive Director\nJon Adam Ross has spent more than 25 years making art with communities around the country as an actor\, playwright\, and teaching artist and the last 8 years as a co-founding artist and Executive Director of the In[HEIR]itance Project. Jon has served as an artist in residence at Union Theological Seminary\, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America\, and many other religious and educational institutions. Jon has been a Covenant Foundation Fellow\, a LABA Fellow\, a Pedagogies Research Fellow with M²\, a Cogenerate Innovation Fellow\, and a Spielberg Fellow in Theater Education with the Foundation for Jewish Camp. Jon holds a BFA in Acting from NYU/Tisch. With the Inheritance Theater Project\, a national arts non-profit that works with communities to build relationships across divides through collaborative theater projects inspired by shared cultural touchstones\, Jon has co-created original plays in communities all over America. His stage credits include: a dog\, a 2\,000-year-old bird\, an elderly orthodox Jew\, a spurned housewife\, a horse\, a British naval officer in 1700s Jamaica\, a goat\, Jesus Christ\, a lawyer\, a wrestler\, a hapless police chief\, and a cyclops. \nZhailon Levingston\nZhailon is a Louisiana-raised storyteller\, director\, and activist whose work has developed original work in New York and throughout the country. He co-created and serves on the Board of the Broadway Advocacy Coalition where he helped create the curriculum of their Theatre of Change course\, started at Columbia Law School. Zhailon has done work with organizations like Idina Menzel’s A Broader Way Foundation\, and co founded the Arts/Advocacy campaign #WordsonWhite. He was the Resident Director for “Tina: The Tina Tuner Musical”\, the Associate Director of “Hadestown” in Korea\, and became the youngest Black director in Broadway history when he directed “Chicken and Biscuits\,” one of the first shows to open on Broadway after the shutdown. Zhailon recently directed “Patience” at Second Stage Uptown. Zhailon is the Co-director of “Reconstruction” with Tony Award-winner Rachel Chavkin\, and the upcoming New York revival of “CATS” at PAC NYC.
