SUMMARY:Shavuot Across Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Shavuot Across Brooklyn\nJune 11 @ 9:00 PM – June 12 @ 8:30 PM\nCongregation Beth Elohim\nJoin different minyanim\, synagogues\, and organizations from across Brooklyn in an all-night tikkun at Congregation Beth Elohim. Beginning at 9:00 PM\, the program will feature 40+ learning sessions from some of our borough’s finest teachers\, ending with sunrise services in the wee hours of the morning. This event is a hallmark of the Brooklyn Jewish calendar\, and we’re excited to host it again this year. \nSpecial Programs Led by Lab/Shul Spiritual + Ritual Leaders: \n6/11 @ 11 PM – with Naomi Less: ”\nRegendered Torah: An Interactive Exploration”\nJoin Yael Kanarek\, Toratah’s founder\, and Naomi Less\, the artistic producer of the groundbreaking new album\, Songs of Toratah: ZimraTah as we dive into an interactive exploration learning about Toratah\, the regendered Torah. The Songs of Toratah features stylistically diverse compositions by international singer-songwriters who composed singable melodies from verses of Toratah. Through their words and music\, they contributed to the creation of a new cultural language. This session will feature live music and engaging study + surprise guest singers and musicians. \n6/11 @ 11 PM – with Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie and Rabbi Rachel Timoner:\n“All You Need is Vav: how a broken letter in the Torah can help us repair ruptures and build Both/And Attitudes”\nIn these times of extreme polarization and division\, in particular when our world seems split between those who are pro-Israel and those who are pro-Palestine\, why and how might we foster a Both/And attitude within ourselves and our spheres of influence? Can we derive such an attitude from Jewish tradition? How do we hold Both/And without equating degrees of suffering\, without flattening the power differentials\, or without abdicating loyalty to our own people?  And what are the limits of Both/And? A single letter in the Torah may hold the key to holding it all together. \n6/11 @ TBD – with Shira Kline:\n“SongCircle on the Mountain Top”\nLab/Shul’s Shira Kline with Rachel Chang of LUNAR Collective and A Queer Niggun Project circle up on the mountaintop to raise our collective spirit together. We’ll use song\, silence\, high vibe melodies both old and new\, to connect\, to uplift and to let go into the Shavuot Harvest Season. Come with a song\, come sing along\, just come! As singing is a listening practice as well\, gentle instrument play is welcome and no musical experience is necessary. \n6/12 @ 12:05 AM – with Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie and Rabbi Rachel Timoner:\n“Repair the World at Any Cost? The Jewish History and Ethical Dilemmas of Hostage Redemption\, and the Surprising Origin of Tikkun Olam”\nNine months later\, the fate of so many hostages remains unknown. The question of how to bring them home is incredibly divisive due to political\, theological\, and ideological concerns. It turns out we’re not the first generation to grapple with such tragic moral dilemmas. The debates between the imperative to save every single human life and the obligation to communal survival are recorded throughout Jewish history and surprisingly birthed the aspirational term tikkun olam\, to repair the world. On this night of revelation\, how can this history help us make sense of the anguish of this present moment and give us tools to participate in the needed healing? \n  \nFULL CBE Schedule \n9:00 p.m.:\nContemporary Creative Ma’ariv led by local clergy and ritualists (Chapel) \n9:30 p.m.:\nTraditional Egalitarian Service (Sanctuary)\nOrthodox Service (Boardroom) \n10:15 p.m.:\nWelcome and Introduction to Learning (Sanctuary) \n10:30 -11 p.m.:\nKeynote w/ Yael Kanarek (Sanctuary) \n11 p.m.-5:20 a.m.:\nLearning (Various) \n5:30 a.m.: Sunrise Shavuot Service (Chapel) \n*** \n6:30 p.m.: Yizkor Memorial Service (Chapel) \nMore information can be found here.

SUMMARY:ReCollect Seasonal Kaddish Gathering
DESCRIPTION:ReCollect Seasonal Kaddish Gathering\nHosted by Lab/Shul’s Kaddish Club\nWednesday\, June 12th\n6:45pm ET in NYC (Manhattan’s Village)\n7:00pm ET Online\n\nAs we journey towards Shavuot and the revelation of wisdom (Torah)\, we also acknowledge special folks we’ve lost along the way. What is the wisdom they shared with us during our precious time together? \nLab/Shul’s ReCollect/Yizkor is a seasonal gathering to remember our loved ones\, share stories\, lift memory\, and say Kaddish\, the ancient memorial prayer\, together. Throughout the year\, ReCollect meets near or on the times of memory (Yizkor) on the Jewish calendar (Yom Kippur\, Sukkot\, Passover and in this month Shavuot). \nWhether you’ve experienced a recent loss\, are remembering a loved one who passed long ago\, or showing up in support of community\, you are welcome here. Together\, we acknowledge feelings of loss that can be particularly painful as we anticipate empty chairs at our tables and holes in our hearts. \nRegister to join in person >\nRegister to join online >\n**Please note for IN PERSON attendees.**\nThe in person event will take place on a rooftop in Manhattan’s Village (indoors should weather demand). Dress with weather in mind.

SUMMARY:Put it on Paper: Grief Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Put it on Paper: Grief Writing Workshop\nWednesday\, August 14\n7:30 – 9:00pm ET\nOnline\n  \nWitnessing your grief through writing is a powerful tool for healing. Hear how grief writing helped two grievers as they navigated Jewish mourning rituals\, and explore writing prompts to help you tell your own grief story. This experiential writing workshop will include the opportunity to share in optional small-group breakout sessions. \nThis is part of a 2-part writing workshop series with Shomer Collective. Put it on Paper focuses on both the external and internal experiences of mortality; grief writing (this program) is a space to engage with the deaths of others whom we have known and loved\, while ethical wills prompt us to consider our own legacies. All are welcome to either or both sessions. \nThis session and series will be recorded. This offering is a partnership between Lab/Shul and Shomer Collective. \nPlease note that this session is not a substitute for grief therapy or mental health support. If you need referrals please reach out to hello@shomercollective.org. \nPresenters: \nJennifer Bleyer\, LMSW\, is a psychotherapist at Erika Malm Collective and Brooklyn Counseling Services. She was formerly an editor and journalist for nearly 20 years\, including work as a senior editor at Psychology Today\, City section reporter for The New York Times\, and adjunct faculty at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University. \nChloe Nassau\, MSW\, previously was a consultant with Shomer Collective researching grief and mourning in Jewish life. Previously\, she served as the Senior Regional Director for Honeymoon Israel. She also served as the Director of Youth Programs at the 14th Street Y in Manhattan. She earned her MSW at Hunter College School of Social Work and has a BA in International Relations from Boston University. Chloe is passionate about transforming communities. SUMMARY:Connecting Across The Divide Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Workshop:\nConnecting Across The Divide\nSunday\, September 8\, 2024 | 10a-12p EST\nBrooklyn\nLab/Shul invites you to join Itaf Awad (Palestinian from Haifa) and Aura Hammer (Jew from the Galilee)\, who have worked together for over 20 years to build and support peace\, equality and connection\, for an evening talk and workshop. \nItaf and Aura will share with us their journey\, and how their work partnership and sisterhood has survived the difficulties over the years and especially the Israel-Gaza war. The workshop will offer a taste of The Way of Council\, the way of listening and speaking from the heart\, which is what created the strong roots of their connection and work together. \n“October 7th tore apart reality as we knew it in Israel-Palestine. Our perception of how things are was shattered on multiple levels and has affected not only those living on this land but many people and communities around the world. We are still in shock in far too many ways\, and worse\, see no end in sight. We – Itaf Awad and Aura Hammer – who have worked together for over 20 years as carriers of the way of peace\, equality\, of connection\, found ourselves on the brink of being torn away from each other\, the pain we experienced was so profound. Our 20 year collaboration and sisterhood are built on the foundation of creating a safe space for each other and for others. A space for holding joy and pain\, for deep honest relationships. And so we are still connected. The connection is often rocked\, as our reality is an earthquake constantly happening\, yet we refuse to give up. And we refuse to have you give up. Even if we lose hope\, we will persist in our search.” ~ Itaf and Aura \nTHIS EVENT IF FREE – THANKS TO YOU! Please help us support these peacemakers.\nDonations go a long way to help these courageous hope carriers to continue to do their important work. Suggested donation $45 but please give any amount you can. SUMMARY:Recollect Seasonal Kaddish Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Recollect Seasonal Kaddish Gathering\nSukkot\nThursday\, October 24th\n12pm ET\nOnline\nAs we leave the high holidays and enter into the harvest holiday of Sukkot\, the Jewish calendar offers us an opportunity to invite the ancestors who came before us into temporary shelters (Sukkot). These huts serve as memory holders for both biblical ancestors and our own who we love and miss. Sukkot is the first of three ancient pilgrimage holidays when collective community gathers to remember (Yizkor). \nWe will create our temporary shelter online on October 24th at 12pm during our weekly Virtual Kaddish Call . Rabbi Amichai will join us for this special extended call to offer learning and space to hold our grief. \nRegister to join online >
