SUMMARY:ReCollect
DESCRIPTION:ReCollect\nA Kaddish Gathering\nAs this high holy day season approaches\, we enter a tender season of consciousness – that time has passed and so\, too\, the time when we were last physically together with lost loved ones. \nReCollect/Yizkor is a seasonal gathering to remember our loved ones\, share stories\, lift memory\, break bread and say Kaddish\, the ancient memorial prayer\, together.  ReCollect meets near the times of memory (Yizkor) on the Jewish calendar (Yom Kippur\, Sukkot\, Passover and Shavuot).  \nWhether experiencing a recent loss\, remembering a loved one who passed away long ago\, or showing up in support of community\, we gather to acknowledge feelings of loss that can be particularly painful as we anticipate an empty chair at our tables.  \nOur next ReCollect/Yizkor will help us to prepare for the Yizkor Ritual at Yom Kippur. It will be held BOTH in person (at 5:45 pm ET) * and online (at 6:00 pm ET) simultaneously. \nREGISTER IN PERSON \nREGISTER ONLINE \n*Please note\, the in person event will take place outdoors on a rooftop in Manhattan. Masks will be required while traveling indoors to the roof. If you are comfortable sitting on the ground\, you’re welcome to bring a blanket\, as we have limited seating. Light snacks will be provided. Please do bring something to share. We ask that you not bring any dishes with meat in them\, as we strive to respect everyone’s dietary practices and observances.

This is our Acid Mussar Temple. \nSegulalelo is an opportunity to come together\, to collect ourselves in the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur\, to let our voices be heard and to hear other voices. To lose ourselves in sound. \nWe aspire to create a communal ritual\, a form of chant drawing from the Texts. Chant frees words from their lingual casings. Phrases bisect into feelings and rhythm. Focus blurs and sharpens on the rises and falls of a tongue. We hear drummers. We deepen understanding by repeating one meaningful thought rather than by plodding through so many. The beat is our breath. Our breath is our life. We breathe together\, we live together\, we beat. \nJoin us for an evening of chant and music led by Dan Saks and with live improvisation by Carlos Metta\, Naomi Less\, Scott Perlo\, Shahzad Ismaily\, and others! \n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between The Neighborhood\, Lab/Shul\, and Romemu Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:From Word to Word: A Generative Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:September 11\, 2022\nIN PERSON AT RABBI AMICHAI’S HOME + ON ZOOM\n12:00 – 2:00 PM ET\nMidrash is a uniquely Jewish imaginative practice in which sacred texts generate new sacred texts. We will begin our generative workshop by studying midrashic poems from The Missing Jew and other sources. Then we will practice producing new work from texts provided by Rodger.  (You may also bring your own texts.) The work you produce can take the form of poetry in verse\, prose poetry\, poetic prose\, or non-fiction\, whatever genre you feel most comfortable with.  We will share the results\, laugh a little and learn how to open up to the possibility of renewing sacred texts through soulful imagination. \nRODGER KAMENETZ IS A POET AND NON-FICTION WRITER. HIS SINGULAR INTEREST IS THE IMPORTANCE OF PRIMARY IMAGINATION FOR THE SPIRITUAL LIFE. HIS MOST RECENT BOOK IS THE MISSING JEW: POEMS 1976-2022 REPRESENTING NEARLY FIFTY YEARS OF POETRY OF THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE. FOUNDING DIRECTOR OF THE MFA PROGRAM IN CREATIVE WRITING AT LSU\, FOUNDING DIRECTOR OF THE JEWISH STUDIES PROGRAM THERE AS WELL\, HE HELD THE STERNBERG HONORS CHAIR AND IS CURRENTLY PROFESSOR EMERITUS. RABBI ZALMAN SCHACHTER-SHALOMI Z”L HONORED HIM AS A MAGGID FOR HIS WORK IN WRITING AND WITH DREAMS. RODGER IS AUTHOR OF FIFTEEN BOOKS OF POETRY AND PROSE\, AMONG THEM THE JEW IN THE LOTUS\, STALKING ELIJAH WHICH WON THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD\, THE HISTORY OF LAST NIGHT’S DREAM AND BURNT BOOKS. HE LEADS AN INTERNATIONAL GROUP OF NATURAL DREAMWORK PRACTITIONERS WHO TEACH A PATH TO THE SOUL THROUGH DREAMS.

SUMMARY:DIY SHIVITI Making + SHABasics
DESCRIPTION:Septemer 9\, 2022 // 6:00 – 7:30 pm ET\nON ZOOM\nA creative hands-on art workshop to explore SHIVITI imagery for this year’s High Holy Days of Awe theme.   \nJoin Associate Clergy Ben Freeman\, the ritual team and Lab/Shul community for a deep dive into the transformative power of collage.   \nBen will share a teaching on the art form of visual meditation called SHIVITI (see more info below!) and then guide us in creating our own.  \nAll you need is what you have!  \nMaterials can include: \n\nScissors (or you can rip by hand)\nTape or glue\nPaper\, cardstock\, or another surface to assemble your collage on\nMagazines\, newspapers\, craft paper\, anything that might provide images\, textures\, and colors to work with and that you feel comfortable cutting up.\nPersonal ephemera like letters\, postcards\, old journals\, photos\, etc. if you feel comfortable cutting those materials up.\nClick here to print a few classic SHIVITI images from around the world to be used for cutting up into your collage\nAn open heart and a playful mind!\n\nWith our new SHIVITI imagery to guide\, we’ll close our time together with the season’s first SHABasics: songs and blessings to lead into Shabbat. \nOur theme this year is SHIVITI\, a Hebrew concept that is simultaneously our oldest contemplative meditation technique\, a visual iconography of the sacred\, and an expression of ‘concrete poetry’–a unique genre in which words meet imagery as a way to inspire our sensory awareness. SHIVITI is an invitation to better balance\, towards us setting intention and paying attention to what matters most. \nLet’s reimagine SHIVITI. As we explore this concept and what it means to be in the presence of the infinite\, we invite you to co-create this series of offerings with us. \nWe’ll use this workshop to explore making our own SHIVITI imagery using the art of collage\, using what you have at home to make something new. We’ll close our time together with the familiar songs and blessings that lead us into Shabbat\, and prep for the High Holy Days\, Lab/Shul style. \n

SUMMARY:“Libi Davai”: A Communal Gathering to Mourn Those Lost to COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Lab/Shul is honored to join T’ruah\, JFREJ\, and other partners in faith and justice for a ritual gathering of song\, liturgy\, and community in Central Park’s East Meadow on the evening of the 9th of Av\, August 7th\, so that we may ease our hearts together. \nTwo and a half-years into a global pandemic\, we see a deep need for a moment of communal acknowledgement of the vast loss experienced by our communities and our city. As the Jewish calendar urges us to reflect on historic pain and destruction\, we gather together to name and integrate our sense of loss\, mourning those whose lives have been taken by the pandemic\, and the pain caused by the exposure of the fatal gaps in societal webs of support for the most marginalized.  \nJoin Shira Kline and Rabbi Amichai\, along with leaders\, artists and activist from other communities and organizations\, in person and online\, to mark and end this fast\, together.  \nOn the afternoon of Tisha B’Av\, we seek not only to name and metabolize our collective grief\, but also to move forward– not to return to what has passed\, but to build ahead in mutual support and consolation.

SUMMARY:Rise from Rubble // Tisha B'Av
DESCRIPTION:On a day when we lift up what has been broken\, we pause to grieve\, raise up the shards\, and rise from the rubble to the task of repair and renewal.  \nJoin Co-Founders and Spiritual Leaders Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie and Shira Kline with guests including poet Rodger Kamenetz\, Rev. Derrick McQueen\, and Rabbi Mira Rivera for a special SoulSpa Zoom ritual on the Ninth of Av.  Through poetry and prayer\, meditation and conversation\, we’ll create sacred space together for the broken pieces of our personal and public lives.  \nThe Ninth of Av is Judaism’s saddest day\, marked by fasting\, reflecting and lamenting historical destruction and exile\, as well as enduring\, current realities of hatred\, division and discrimination.  \nThe afternoon of the fast is traditionally the time in which the rebirth of hope begins\, as we rise from grief towards growth\, guided by our ancestral prophetic promise.  \nFollowing this event\, Shira and Rabbi Amichai will be joining our partners at TIRDOF for an in-person and online gathering in Central Park\, to Mourn those lost to COVID-19. SUMMARY:American Friends of Combatants for Peace Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Join the largest Israeli-Palestinian peace event in history. On May 3\, 2022\, we will gather to call for peace\, freedom\, and human rights for all. The Joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony is hosted by Combatants for Peace and The Parents Circle–Families Forum\, and we are proud that Lab/Shul is an official sponsor this year. Register today. \nJoin Us. \nYom Hazikaron\, Israel’s Memorial Day\, is a solemn day on which Israelis remember those they have lost in the years of war and conflict. Traditionally\, the Palestinian narrative is erased\, leading both sides into deeper despair. By acknowledging the pain of those living on the other side\, the Ceremony offers us all the choice to walk a new path: the path of respect\, equality\, freedom – and ultimately peace. In this time of immense anxiety and separation\, the upcoming Joint Memorial Day Ceremony offers hope for a better future.

SUMMARY:ReCollect: Seasonal Kaddish Gathering
DESCRIPTION:ReCollect\nA Seasonal Kaddish Gathering\nHosted by Lab/Shul’s Kaddish Club\n\nLab/Shul’s Recollect/Yizkor gatherings offer grief support for those in active mourning\, experiencing loss and/or observing a yahrzeit. \nWhether experiencing a recent loss\, remembering a loved one who passed long ago\, or showing up to support community\, we will gather each season to acknowledge feelings of loss that can be particularly painful as we anticipate an empty chair at the table. We will share memories and poetry\, break bread together\, and recite Kaddish for our loved ones – the ancient memorial prayer. \n  \nAs we prepare for the upcoming Passover holiday\, a time when the pain of loss may be more on the surface as we anticipate holidays without our loved ones\, we will be gathering both IN PERSON in NYC and VIRTUALLY online.  \n  \nApril 11th at 7:00pm we will gather IN PERSON in NYC\, held in space by facilitators Naomi Less and Dina Friedman.  \nApril 23rd at 12pm\, the end of Passover when Yizkor/Memorial prayers are traditionally recited\, we will gather VIRTUALLY\, held in space by facilitators Naomi Less and Lori Roth Gale. Memorial prayers will be chanted.  \n  \nWhichever event you choose\, you will be held with love. We will co-create sacred space for each other in both large and small groups to remember our loved ones.   \nPlease Note: Unlike the Virtual Mourner’s Kaddish call\, this gathering will be held with video screens on. \n  \nYou can join our weekly Virtual Mourner’s Kaddish Call\, every Thursday at 12:00pm ET. \n\n

SUMMARY:Seder Queen 5782
DESCRIPTION:Seder Queen 5782: Moses of the City\nA Jews of Color-centered Passover Seder\, Lab/Shul style.\nWelcome to Seder Queen\, co-led by Marques Hollie and Associate Director and Ritual Leader Naomi Less with support from the Lab/Shul Ritual Team.  We are honored to premiere the Moses of the City Haggadah as our core Passover ritual tool\, created by artist in residence\, Luis Burgos along with live music\, poetry\, theater and heart-centered powerful conversations centering the perspectives of Jews of Color.  \n \nSeder Queen reflects the diversity of Judaism and lifts up the work of Jews of Color in Jewish spaces that have been historically white. We hope that other Jews of Color will experience Seder Queen as transformative\, and know that they are not alone. We hope that white Jews will be moved to do the work of liberation alongside JOCs and know that JOCs are integral to Jewish continuity and to Jewish communal spaces. \n \nBuy your own Moses in the City Haggadah directly from Luis’ website.\nThis seder is generously supported by a grant from Jews of Color Initiative\, an organization which works to build a truly multiracial\, anti-racist Jewish community in which Jews of Color can experience joy and reach their full potential and belonging as leaders and community members. Lab/Shul is also proud to partner with Ammud: Jews of Color Torah Academy\, JOC Mishpacha Project\, LUNAR\, and Mitsui Collective for this evening.  \nFeatured Ritualists   \n\nAri L. To support this commitment\, we have devised a sliding scale which aims to take into account both the inequitable distribution of wealth in our society as well as the value of the labor required to offer this program. Lab/Shul is committed to resource redistribution\, which is why we ask you to think deeply about your relationship to class in general. If this is the first time you’ve been asked to consider class and wealth\, Seder Queen is a perfect opportunity to start! \nWe encourage participants to self-select into paying the amount that best correlates to your class position.  \nHere are two resources that we’ve found helpful to understand class in the U.S (thanks Amelia Mae Paradise and Franny Silverman for assisting our learning): \n\n“About Class” // Class Action\, a cross-class group working towards Economic Justice\n“Class distinctions and class brackets” // Resource Generation an organization supporting young people in equitable wealth\, land\, and power redistribution. This resource is helpful in discovering which class category you fall into.\n\nWe invite you to consider a Sponsorship level table or ticket if you fall into Tier 3.  \nMile Chai Club: A curated\, balcony level seating experience for young adults who have greater access to wealth. Consider this if you fall into Tier 2 or higher \nPartner Discount: Partnerhood works on the simple premise that each of us gives something of ourselves in order to get a whole lot more from each other. It’s designed to help create the deeply engaged\, cross-connected community you’ve told us you want. It’s about investing. It’s about flexibility. Interested in learning more about Partnerhood?
